Unlike the evolution of Western monastic traditions that focused on small numbers of cloistered, celibate persons, Celtic Monasticism was remarkably broad and inclusive. As early as the 6th century persons from all walks of life, age, gender, and marital status were encouraged “to tend to the small monk within…” These ‘anamcara’ (soul friendship) spiritual practices include a profound contemplative tradition
that is being recovered and translated for our time.
